UNIFI-ed

When Unifi was launched, I only considered the 20Mbps to be under the high speed broadband category. 5Mbps and 10Mbps doesn't sound fast as some providers already giving more than 20 Mbps in oversea. So I waited till I can get 'discount' for the 20Mbps. Orignally have appointment to install in early June but then there was free slot on a Sunday, so they came to do the job end of May. Total time from application to installation is just 2 weeks. Very fast consider some waited for 2-3 months.

Installation was pretty smooth, TM contractor just lay a fiber cable from the FDU box on the telephone pole outside my house. Can't say it was a pretty job but since my parents don't care much so just lay as neat as possible without extra cost. Lucky they no need drill hole since old house got plenty of air box.

Requested them to lay a LAN cable from my room to the living room via the outer wall since this the shortest way. Look ugly, but then still cost RM 80 (RM 5 per meter), which still ok consider they were doing in the hot sun and I don't have a ladder. Total installation took just over 2 hours and everything was running fine without a hitch. :D

Some comments after using it for 3 months:

1. Youtube still run smoothly although it only fast load for first 2 minute or so. But still you don't need to buffer if you skip to different part of the video. But streaming video from other sites will still experience some slowness as they not having local cache/peering like Youtube.

2. Speedtest was pretty consistent till now as I still get 80%-100% of the advertised speed. Not sure if because my area has less users.

3. TM equipment is crap. The power supply connector inside the adapter torn and I have to replace it. Most complain about the D-link router, which is also crap and its wifi signal is really unstable and weak. Always can change to a TP-Link model for only RM 80-88.

4. IPTV, not really important for me, I seldom watch TV. But its an improvement for the free channels considering was having problem watching NTV7, 8TV etc since the antenna can't receive signal well.

5. Direct download websites are blocked but you can go through via 'other' DNS servers. Suggest getting a premium account for full speed as you get unstable download from normal DDL sites.
Rapidgen is pretty cheap for only USD3.25 per month from over 12 hosts. :D
