I remember servicing an old system once. The system was installed probably around 1995. What happend was I accidently burnt a port on one of the cards. Twice! The smoke came out from the port and it smelled like 'ikan bakar'. Needless to say, the port was unusable. Luckily, manage to rectify with another spare port.
I probably told countless lies to my customers during my working period. Bullshiting about problems and hiding the real facts. Luckily they buy it since they are not that technically knowledgeable. I have to do this to cover my ass and to uphold my profesionalism...haha.
On a good day, I probably received around 20 calls from customers just for the morning part. With that I will do selective call answering, probably ignoring calls from those smaller customers and handle the big ones first. Sometimes, I am the only engineer in KL and have to attend to around three system that has crashed. Luckily they are not that hard to fix.
Now, on a really good day, there are no calls from customer. So I just sit in office, feeling bored every moment. Sure I can do and update my technical documentations and reports but of course I rather laze around and surf the Net.
One funny thing is that half the time, I call to my Singaporean Seniors for help, they always tell me they never tested before or never encounter this problem before. So, as usual, I just figured out on my own.
After learning much from pratical experience, the 'over challenging' nows become a challenging job.
