I am going to write a 3 parter regarding my current job. For me, it has been a fascinating job which I truly have learnt a lot from it.
First Part: Debut Days
When I started my first day at this company, I have no table of my own. Neither do my new colleagues. In fact we have been just allocated a small section for our new division. The existing engineers in the company, to be honest was quite pissed that we took a chunk of their working space. I share a table with my new colleagues who only join 1 month earlier than me. The existing engineers would not even smile or so much say ‘hi’ if we were to smile or say hello at them. All them give us the straight face.
All my new colleagues of this section have been only working for 4 months the most. We have no seniors around. There were 5 of us.
All the ex-staff that manage this PABX brand has left and have opened their own business and directly become our rivals. The regional office sent a senior engineer over to guide us for the time being. All my colleagues thought this job was ‘over challenging’. None of us have the experience and really have no idea how a PABX work. I was luck enough to have 2 weeks training in Singapore on this system and soon was put on the field alone upon my return. There was once my colleague went to over to a customer to find the system die on him. With no experience on the system which was around 15 years old, needless to say the customer went ballistic on him and we have to temporary replace a new with a new system. The customer location was an old hotel in Kota Bahru.
Another big customer decides to play and taunt us. The manager has no choice but to ask my colleague to standby at the site to make any changes that is required as the customer has already sent ‘love letter’ to us. He has to report there for 1 whole month making changes as deem fit by the customer.
The few first months were no doubt a big challenge for us. Dealing every single problem for the first time, learning on our own mostly. The complaints were going up everyday and each of us were struggling to hangle them. It can only get worse.
